IT 499 Bachelor Capstone Week 2

Adgenda Administrative Review UNIT One UNIT Two Project UNIT Three Preview Project Status Summary

Administrative Seminar – Course is project based, 85% for project, 15% for discussion. Seminars are not graded. Project overview:

Capstone Project Overview The technology solution you will be developing and implementing will be generally referred to in the course as the "Capstone Project." The capstone project is the deliverable solution you will develop. The Capstone Project should be tied to your networking, programming, Web development, or database emphasis area within the B.S. IT program. If you do not have an emphasis area, choose a project in which you feel you have the most expertise. If you have a desire to do a project in an area where you have experience, such as Web design, discuss this with your instructor. During the course, you will be completing other, smaller projects as part of the development process. These other projects are graded separately from the Capstone Project itself. Your Capstone Project will be unique from those being worked on by other students as you will be creating it for a specific organization. You should think of your project as a microcosm of development activities in the technology field, and as a way to demonstrate the knowledge that you have gained and the skills and abilities that you have developed during your B.S.-IT studies. In selecting a project, choose one with a realistic scope so that you can complete it within the time frame of the course. You must submit your project to be approved by your instructor before beginning. Following the guidelines for a four-credit course, you will be expected to spend approximately hours of work on the project during the term. That amount of time is outside of the time spent on Seminar sessions, reading and research, and Discussion Thread work. Given the relatively short amount of time you will have to work on the project during the term, make sure that the scope of the project will allow you to complete it within that time frame.

Project Overview In this unit, students select the Capstone Project they intend to work on through out the term. They report on the organization for which they will be completing the project, the type of project, and the relationship of the project to their BS IT emphasis area.

Seminar This week's Seminar session is about what you plan to do for your capstone course. In the Unit 2 Seminar, we will discuss the capstone projects for the course and the project and site selection. If you have submitted your Selection Report prior to the Seminar, your presentation can be shared with the class. The Seminar session is your opportunity to ask any questions or to clarify material that has been presented in this week’s learning outcomes or readings. If you have specific questions or topics that you would like to see addressed in the Seminar session, please your instructor prior to the day of your chat.

Site Report - Project The Information Technology Solution you develop must be in your BS IT emphasis area of Networking, Programming, Web Development, or database administration. The capstone project must meet the identified needs of the client. Create a PowerPoint Presentation for the class identifying the organization you will be working with and the capstone project you expect to complete, i.e the nature of the project itself, and the scope of it.. In your presentation, provide some basic information about the company – type of business, size, number of employees, clients, etc. to give the class a sense of the what the organization is and does

Presentation Assignment The presentation should follow the following format: – Your information – include your contact information – The emphasis area that you plan for your project to be – The organization’s type (government, high tech, educational, medical) location(site) you will be working with, the departments you will be working with, and the primary contact(s) you will be working with – Nature of Project (i.e., network, website, database, software program...etc.) – Scope of the project: the specific problems or needs that the project is intended to solve – Resources you expect to need/use to complete the project

Presentation Assignment You may include additional information that you feel is relevant on additional slides. Remember that the purpose of the presentation is to convey key project information. Keep the presentation simple and to the point. Use bulled lists whenever possible. Do not use animation on the slides unless it is necessary to demonstrate the nature or scope of the project. If possible, post your project to the DocSharing folder so that it can be reviewed by the class prior to the Chat session for the week. Project Assessment/Grading Rubric

Presentation Assignment The project should contain each of the following items based upon the instructor’s judgment. Deduction of points based on what is not completed is at the instructor’s discretion. – The student’s contact information – The emphasis area in which the student plans to do for the project – The student should list the organization – Who the student will be working with – Who the main contact for the project should be – The nature of project should be mentioned (i.e., network, website, database, software program...etc.) – The specific problems or needs that the project is intended to solve should be mentioned – Resources the student needs to complete the project

Week 3 Preview Needs Analysis and System Specification – In this Unit, students conduct a technology or design needs analysis within an organization in which a problem or need has been identified. They will develop and implement a solution to this problem or need later in the course. Students submit a PowerPoint Presentation containing a summary of identified needs and a preliminary system specification of their proposed solution to meet the identified needs.

Conducting and Writing a Needs Analysis Time Estimation Budgeting and Project Scope

Week Three Assignment This presentation should follow a structured approach, and you may use the following organizational outline as a guide: Basic cover page with your name, project name, course, and date Name of the organization, type of business (retail, manufacturing, service, non- profit, medical, education, etc.), and location Description of the organization or department for which you will develop a technology or design solution. Include the type of work done at the location, the number of employees, physical description of the location, and any equipment relevant to the project. Detailed listing of the problems or needs that your project intends to solve. Detailed Preliminary Design Specification outlining your description of your proposed solution to meet the organization's needs. Include personnel, equipment, software, and other items needed to develop and implement your proposed solution. This document should be three to five pages in length. NOTE: The assignment must be in MS Word Document, not Powerpoint
