Grade Communication Track your child’s academic progress on Illuminate (we will send out a communication as soon as Illuminate is updated for the school year). We will also be contacting you individually for fabulous academic progress as well as academic concerns. Planners: Planners are used to record homework and important dates.

Homework No more study hall! Teachers keep track of missing work and students write missing work in their planner. Missing work is due by the end of the week. Each student has 3 homework “strikes” per month before we will call home to come up with a solution together. Solution might be tutoring, after-school or before- school homework club, or a designated place/time outside of school for homework

Tutoring Tutoring is by invitation only to ensure adequate support. Tutoring may include support for learning targets, homework, or missed work. Ms. Oduardo’s tutoring is on Thursdays from 7:15-7:45am and Thursdays from 3:30-4:00pm Ms. Welte’s tutoring is on Thursdays from 4:00- 5:00pm.

Inform the front office and your child’s teacher of any planned extended absences. Attendance is taken daily in the morning. Classes begin promptly at 7:50am!

Housekeeping: Behavior PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports RP: Restorative Practices The fourth grade team is committed to holding students responsible for their choices and for understanding how these choices affect themselves and their community.

ELA - English Language Arts Ms. Welte, Ms. Oduardo, Ms. Fry Vision: All fourth graders become proficient and independent readers, writers, and thinkers. Students were placed into fluid performance groups based on 2015 i-Ready reading scores. Engage New York Curriculum connects reading and writing, and integrates Social Studies/Science Homework depends on the unit; it might be reading or writing short pieces. 120 Minute Block: 80 minutes = instruction and work time using Engage New York 40 minutes = guided reading rotations

Writer’s Workshop, Social Studies, Science Our Writer’s Workshop model is built to support student’s writing development and to support the learning targets of ELA class All Writer’s Workshop work will be completed in-class. Since ELA classes heavily support social studies and science learning, students attend SS/Science twice weekly. Students will be given ample time to complete tasks; any unfinished work will be completed on their own time. We will communicate in advance about social studies and science projects to be completed at home.

Math Ms. Welte, Ms. Oduardo, Ms. Miles Vision: All fourth graders will become efficient and persistent problem solvers with a focus on concepts rather than answers. Students were placed into fluid performance groups based on 2015 i-Ready math scores. Highline Academy uses Eureka Math. Homework: Homework questions are addressed in class; it is preferred to let students work on homework independently.

Spanish - Mrs. Jayson -Spanish instruction: 2 times a week for 40 minutes. -No H.W but unfinished class work must be finished at home. -Binder: All of your child’s class work, assessments, etc will be filed in the Spanish binder (please see binder for more details) -Communication: - Please subscribe to for announcentswww.remind.com/join/sjayso - Syllabus, year long map and more information will be posted in the website:
