Workshop Objectives & Plan Sept 18-20, 2013, Carleton College Bring everyone up to speed on – Importance of what we are doing – why, how, for whom – Pedagogy & assessment techniques, i.e., integral to mini-lessons – Mechanics of mini-lesson development, using the CMS – Available resources to aid in mini-lesson completion Review suite of mini-lessons under development, e.g., – Gallery of exemplary mini-lessons (poster and interactive session) – Ongoing discussions, question & answer sessions among authors Complete the mini-lessons [Lots of working time!] Fit mini-lessons into common course frameworks (& fill gaps) Outline field testing, data collection and analysis plans – Goals, responsibilities, approach, recruiting – Filling out matrix, recruiting volunteers Looking forward – next steps

Motivation for this Project Unique opportunity/obligation to bring the landmark MARGINS science of the last decade into the undergraduate curriculum using state of the art teaching practices. – A major goal of higher education today, prompted by federal emphasis on teaching critical thinking and the scientific process through encounters with scientific research. Implement best educational practices in this effort. Project marries these two by bringing scientific expertise from MARGINS and educational expertise from SERC and On The Cutting Edge. – Teams are designed with this breadth of expertise to develop and test teaching materials using research based educational practices and state of the art methods for assessing learning.

General Project Objectives Review highlights of a decade+ of MARGINS science in four initiatives, considering how they have changed our understanding of continental margins. Fully develop up to ~2 weeks of course materials for each of four initiatives, based on MARGINS results and data, ready to incorporate into upper-level undergraduate courses, incl. – Lecture, lab and/or other materials; necessary data sets; other resources – Integrated assessment as part of pedagogy Field test materials in the classroom, analyze results, refine. Disseminate materials, facilitate their incorporation into a wide-range of common course frameworks, develop community of practice. Evaluate the project (throughout) and report.
