Why was the Battle of Antietam significant? –It was the single bloodiest day in all of U.S. military history –It gave Lincoln the necessary political support to move forward with his plans to free the slaves in the South. “I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.” Thomas Jefferson

The Final Phase Gettysburg –Following the confederate victory at Chancellorsville, General Lee decided to invade the North again – In June 1863 he crossed into Pennsylvania. –Lincoln urged a quick attack on Lee from General Hooker.

Hooker hesitated, fearing he was outnumbered by the Confederates. Lincoln swiftly replaced Hooker with Gen. George Meade, not wanting another McClellan. Some 75,000 Confederate troops had assembled near the town of Gettysburg.

In search of a shoe warehouse on July 1, 1863 Confederate forces found two Union brigades positioned on high ground Confederates pushed Union lines back to Cemetery Hill and Ridge

July 2, Lee orders an unsuccessful charge of Little Round Top in an attempt to get high ground

July 3, Lee orders some 15,000 under George Pickett to rush the Union’s center on Cemetery Ridge. Less than half of the Confederate soldiers reached the ridge during Pickett’s Charge.

23,000 Confederate casualties 28,000 Union casualties

In November, President Lincoln dedicated a cemetery at Gettysburg. Although only speaking for a few minutes, his address remains a classic statement of democratic ideals. Gettysburg became the turning point in the war for the Union.

Vicksburg General Grant knew controlling the entire Mississippi River required taking Vicksburg. His men laid a six week siege, preventing any confederate reinforcements Confederates were forced to eat rats for survival and soon surrendered

Winfield Scott George McClellan Henry Halleck Ulysses S. Grant

General Ulysses S. Grant is named Commander of all Union forces. He made better use of the advantage the North had in troops and supplies. He plans the war of attrition, to fight the South until they run out of men and supplies. He went after Lee, not allowing any rest. Many men were lost but his plan began to work as the South was slowly whittled away.
