Limbic and Endocrine Systems What connects humans to crocodiles.

Limbic System Hypothalamus - regulates many motivational behaviors including: – eating, drinking, and sexual responses – Emotional behaviors – Secretion of hormones 1/8

Limbic System Amygdala – recieves input from all senses – Evaluates the emotional significance of stimuli and facial expressions, especially those involving fear, distress, or threat. 2/8

Limbic System Thalamus – involved in receiving sensory information, and relaying the info to areas of the brain. – For example, if something was wrong in the thalamus, you might have difficulty processing info from the senses like seeing or hearing. 3/8

Limbic System Hippocampus – a curved structure involved in taking memories and putting them in permanent storage in the brain. 4/8

Endocrine System It all starts with the hypothalamus and pituitary gland: – Hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland. – Pituitary controls water and salt balance, which can affect things such as diabetes, and it secretes growth hormones, which can lead to dwarfism or gigantism. 5/8

Endocrine System The pancreas regulates insulin – Levels of insulin can affect diabetes and hypoglycemia in the body 6/8

Endocrine System Adrenal glands secrete hormones related to resisting stress in the body. – These hormones play a part in sex, in developing sexual characteristics in puberty, and arousing the body’s alert system in emergencies by releasing epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters involved in flight or fight responses) 7/8
