Wombats The creatures of the outback

Wombats- Habitat Wombats live in Australia and other small islands nearby. They live in grasslands and forests. With their little claws, the wombat digs and digs and creates a series of small tunnels and chambers to create a burrow. They live in ‘mobs’ or ‘colonies’ of wombats.

Wombats- Feeding Wombats in zoos usually eat carrots, whilst wild wombats eat thin strands of grass. Sometimes, a wombat may take crops from farmers in Australia while they are out. During droughts (which is quite frequent in Australia) the Wombat will eat native grass or perennial grass.

Wombats- Behaviour The wombat comes out of it’s burrow during cooler points in the day, such as early morning, late afternoon and evening. They are friendly but very smelly creature!

Wombats- Tunnelling System or Burrow During the life of a wombat they will build a long tunnelling system in their ‘territory’. Their ‘burrows’ can range from 2-20 metres across the outback. It is usually a long tunnel with smaller ‘side tunnels’ leading to chambers. Also, there is only one entrance, although they may add one small ‘escape’ route.

Wombats- Appearance They are furry, quite chubby creatures. They have flat noses, they are sometimes hairy, sometimes bald (depending on specie) They can grow up to cm. They can weigh 17-14kg.

Wombats Wombats are lovely animals that can be really cute a furry. They are much like a koala except larger and different fur and ear shape. The very similar thing is THEY SMELL BAD!
