A Regional Health Agenda: Opportunities for Collaboration Presentation to the Council of Government’s Health Officers Committee June 11, 2007 Health Working Group of Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers (WRAG)

What is a Foundation? A foundation is an entity with a special tax status that is established as a nonprofit corporation with a principal purpose of making grants to unrelated, not-for-profit organizations or institutions or to individuals for scientific, educational, cultural, religious, or other charitable purposes.

As Individual Funders, We: Support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the region Target low-income, uninsured, underinsured, racial and ethnic minorities Fund direct services, advocacy, special projects, research, capacity building, and general operating support Focus on prevention and wellness, access to care, health literacy, and advocacy for health systems change

Health Working Group Organized in 1999 through the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers (WRAG) Core group of roughly ten local and national private funders working throughout the DC metropolitan area We do not pool our funds, but our combined grant making in health in the region is estimated at over $10 million annually Most of our funding goes to community-based nonprofit organizations

As a Health Working Group, We: Gather and share information on key health issues in the region, including meeting with key public health officials and policy makers Coordinate our funding and other activities Engage non-health funders around the social determinants of health Partner primarily with other foundations and nonprofits Convene the Regional Primary Care Coalition

Shared Priorities of the Health Working Group Eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health access and health outcomes –Coordinated, regional systems of high quality, comprehensive, patient-centered, community- based health care –Health literacy –Healthy environments and behaviors –Social determinants of health

Cross-Cutting Themes Consumer engagement Building the capacity of the nonprofit sector Timely, accessible, reliable health data
