Earthquakes: L.O: To compare earthquakes caused by different types of plate movements.

The San Francisco earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale and destroyed 28,000 buildings. 3,000 people died from the earthquake and the 52 separate fires that destroyed the city.

Prioritise the following problems in a list from most important to least important. Provide shelter for the homeless Search for missing people Supply medicine for the injured Disposing of dead bodies Rescue stranded people Evacuate people in danger Supply food Supply drinking water

Draw the following table about the effects of an earthquake. Social impact (people) Economic impact (money) Environmental impact (land) Short-term (immediate) impact Long-term impacts

What do the san Francisco 2001 and Gujarat Earthquake shave in common ? San FranciscoGujarat

Categorise the following statements of an earthquake in the table. People may be killed or injured. Homes may be destroyed. Transport links are damaged. Water pipes may burst and water supplies contaminated. Shops and business are destroyed. Looting may take place. Transport and communication systems are disrupted and so trade is not easy. The built landscape is destroyed. Fires spread due to gas pipe explosions damaging woodland. Landslides may occur. Tsunamis may cause flooding in coastal areas. Disease may spread. People may have to be re- housed, sometimes in refugee camps. The cost of rebuilding a settlement is high. Investment in the area is focused only on repairing the damage. Income is lost. Important natural and human landmarks may be lost.

Why does India suffer with earthquakes? Indian Plate African Plate Arabian Plate Plate movement

The Gujarat earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale and killed more than 30,000 people and injured another 55,000 around the city of Bhuj. 500,000 were made homeless. Over 1 million buildings were destroyed. The Indian plate moves into the Eurasian plate at a rate of 6cm a year. This causes the Himalayas to rise by 5mm a year.

Mini fact file on the Gujarat earthquake 1. Write a report on the Gujarat earthquake. Use the following headings to help you: a) What happened? b) Where did it happen? c) When did it happen? d) What damage was done? e) What were the effects on the people of the area?
