Biomedical Engineering Mykaela Blackerby Mrs. Carlisle September 16, 2015

Biomedical Engineering Biomedical engineering is using biology and engineering to improve medical care. It is a branch of chemical engineering, but occasionally works with mechanical engineering. Some examples of biomedical engineering are drug research, artificial limbs, and imaging machines. This is a picture of a runner with two prosthetic legs attaching at his knees. Because of biomedical engineering, he is able to run, instead of being confined to a wheelchair.

Pictures In the picture above, a woman is studying a sample at a microscopic level. The picture to the right is of a closed MRI machine. This is another example of biomedical engineering. The picture below is of an open MRI machine.

More About Biomedical Engineering In order to become a biomedical engineer you must have a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, graduate with a biomedical engineering degree, or get on-site training in biomedical engineering. In May of 2012, the average salary for a biomedical engineer was $86,960. Biomedical engineers can work in hospitals, government facilities, research labs, and universities. For example, the military most likely has a team of biomedical engineers for soldiers who get injured on the battlefield.

More About Biomedical Engineering Biomedical engineering is expected to have a 27% growth in jobs because of awareness and need for improved medical care. This growth is significantly faster than most other professions. Biomedical engineering is important because as time progresses, we rely more and more on modern technology, and biomedical engineering is no exception. Prosthetics are one part, but another main part is medicine. Nowadays our medicine is very advanced. If you go back two or three hundred years ago, you can get a better idea of just how much medicine has advanced.
