Drink Master 8000 Daniel Hudepohl Ethical and Environmental Impact Analysis

Drink Master 8000 Creates a variety of water-based drinks from powders stored in the device. Two holding tanks for storage of multiple beverages. Device can self-clean, so solution cross contamination is eliminated.

Project Specific Success Criteria (PSSC) PSSCDescription 1 An ability to control the (de)activation of motors and flow of water / powder in the device. 2 An ability to view the status of the components of the device and sensor readouts on a PC. 3 An ability to create drinks at a specified time using an on-board timer circuit. 4 An ability to communicate with a user via LCD screen and a rotary pulse generator / touch screen. 5 An ability to maintain the temperature of a holding tank.

Environmental Concerns Acrylic –Used as the exterior paneling –Designed to resist anything, hard to dispose of Ethylene Glycol –Possibly used in heating and cooling liquid –Toxic, ingestion can be fatal PCB –The main board, LCD Board, & Bluetooth Breakout Board –Contains lead, production of PCB’s creates harmful chemicals 4

Environmental Concerns (cont) Mercury –Contained in the LCD –Toxic, is hazardous to one’s health Plastic –Found in the solenoids –Not biodegradable Aluminum –Found in the frame Power –200W power supply - will be in constant use –Microcontroller - clocked at 80MHz, can be scaled down 5

Disposal All parts should be recycled Some recycled components will provide compensation 6

Ethical Concerns Manual Mode Concerns –A solenoid may be left on too long and cause hot liquid to burn the user –A solenoid may be left on too long and may flood the user’s home Safety –Caution signs and warnings could be placed on the device, LCD, and computer –A manual valve can be placed to turn off the main water line 7
