CLASS FORUM ON GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS CHAPTER 9

GMO FORUM During this unit you will be: Applying your knowledge of DNA and proteins to a new concept. Considering the ethical ramifications of genetically modified organisms. Consider unintended consequences that arise from our manipulations of DNA. Identifying different viewpoints in regards to GMOs. Asking relevant questions. Answering those questions intelligently. Honing your research skills.

GMO FORUM Research Spend some time looking for a topic involving GMOs that interests you. You may want to try using these key words: Genetic Engineering (GE) Genetically modified foods Bioremediation Genetically modified organism (GMO) Genetically engineered microorganism (GEM) Transgenic organisms

Research….spend some time looking over these possible topics (there are MANY more!!) Each of you must select a different topic! Round up Ready Golden Rice Flood tolerant Rice Enviropig GM Corn GM Soy Spider Goats GM alfalfa GM tomatoes Calcium carrots GM tsetse fliles GM and malaria Bt corn GE growth hormone Ice resistant strawberries Bioremediation Monsanto Flavr Savr Tomatoes

GMO FORUM Have teacher approve your chosen topic. (TODAY) Research to fill out the chart provided...this is your ROUGH draft. Be sure to collect information that YOU understand!!

GENETIC ENGINEERING FORUM During the forum you will be expected to: Confidently share information on your chosen topic. Be prepared to answer questions from the audience. Listen while others share. Be prepared to ask intelligent questions of other presenters. (you must do this at least one time) Record information about the presented information in your lab notebook.

GENETIC ENGINEERING FORUM Grading criteria: Final draft of research chart/presentation20 points Forum behavior 5 points Intelligent question asked 5 points Able to answer questions asked of you. 5 points Participate in SWIFT site discussion 15 points 50 points In addition, you will…… Record info on all presentations (in your lab notebook)

GMO FORUM On a date to be determined, I will post a discussion thread for your class period in the discussion section of my SWIFT site. Each student must submit a response to the discussion thread, answering the question USING PROPER GRAMMAR AND SPELLING…..no “textlish” please!! You must post your comment by 11:59 pm on (date tbd) or it will be considered late. I will approve and post each reply on (date tbd).
