What were the primary motivations for English Colonies? 8.1 Explain the primary motivations for English colonization of the New World, including the rise of the middle class, the need to move surplus population, and the search for religious freedom.

Colony ► A region or territory controlled by another country

Mercantilism (P. 50) ► Based on the practice of mercantilism the American colonies existed for the benefit of the Mother Country. Colonizing America meant that Britain greatly increased its base of wealth.

Joint Stock Company ► ► a company consisting of individuals who invest capital (money) in a business venture together ► Granted a charter by King James I in 1606, the Virginia Company was a joint-stock company created to establish settlements in the New World. ► The Virginia Company established the colony of Jamestown.

Indentured Servant ► a voluntary or involuntary labor system whereby people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years.
