These are low- interest and must be repaid to the lender.

What are student loans?

This is money that does not have to be repaid, and generally awarded based on need.

What are grants?

This is money that does not have to be repaid, and generally based on merit.

What are scholarships?

This is money that is need-based, but must be earned through a job.

What is federal Work-study?

The form used to collect information about family income and assets, and to determine how much federal and state financial support an individual is eligible to receive.

What is the FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid?

Tuition and fees, books, supplies, and transportation comprise this. It is used when determining financial aid.

What is Cost of Attendance?

This is subtracted from the “cost of attendance” to determine your financial aid eligibility.

What is your “Expected Family Contribution” – EFC?

The months between which most schools want financial aid forms completed.

What is January and March?

These courses help students improve their academic skills. Typically, they do not provide credits towards a degree.

What are remedial or developmental education courses?

The test community colleges use to determine whether or not a student will be admitted into college level courses.

What is a college placement test?

Federally funded programs designed to support low income, first-generation college students.

What are TRIO Programs?

This typically requires a minimum of 60 credits
