MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 2 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS OBJECTIVE Objective  Lego Bricks is an educational payload sponsored by National Lab. Crewmembers will perform tasks to demonstrate simple science concepts. This opportunity allows crewmembers to demonstrate the difference between building Lego bricks on Earth vs. in microgravity. Value  Lego Bricks will be used for instructional lessons to illustrate principles and properties of microgravity and other science concepts.  These educational activities are designed to encourage participation in NASA programs in exploration, science, and aeronautics research and space operations as well as inspire children to engage in further study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subject matter.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 3 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS OVERVIEW  Operations will start in I 27/28 and go through I 31/32.  All building guides will need go through the ECR process at this time. They will go up on ULF-6 in the form of a book.  There are eight Lego Bricks Kits going up on ULF6.  Lego Bricks must be assembled in the MWA Containment System with the exception of two activities.  The Clutch Power Test  Working and Living Interior  Lego Bricks cannot be out of containment for more than two consecutive hours.  As of right now, Lego Bricks can only be built in the US Lab.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 4 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS OVERVIEW CONT.  There is no live video. Video will be down linked at a later time.  As mentioned earlier, a hard copy of the building guides will be on board the station. This is called the Lego Bricks Building Guide Book.  Building guides, hardware lists, and talking points will also be in the on board library.  Crew members will have access to all of the Lego Bricks kits to familiarize themselves at their leisure before flight. These kits are located in the Teaching from Space Office at JSC.  Formal training will be an OBT.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 5 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO CORPORATION  Building guides are created and approved by the LEGO Corporation for use by the Lego Bricks payload.  Most of these kits are or will be for sale to the general public.  Any comments made to the building guides must be reviewed and approved by the LEGO Corporation.  The products will be flown as a hard copy, so no changes to the building guides will be accepted during the JIT.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 8 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS OPERATIONS  Crew will set up the MWA with Containment System.  Crew will mount video camera on the MWA Containment System.  The Crew member will video tape the assembly of the Lego Bricks hardware.  The Crew member will have two hours to complete each building activity.  The Crew member will adjust the video camera to be set up outside the MWA after the build is complete in preparation for the educational video.  For the educational video, the Crew will be asked to demonstrate parts, talk about components and compare every day life on Earth to life on the International Space Station.  They will be provided talking points to assist them with the video taping.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 9 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS OPERATIONS CONSTRAINTS  Lego Bricks must be built in the MWA Containment System to contain the small pieces.  Lego Bricks can not be out of containment for more than two hours due to flammability. PAYLOAD REGULATIONS  There are two Payload Regulations in place to cover the above constraints.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 10 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS KITS  Each kit has sub kits and will contain its own hardware inventory list.  Lego Bricks Workbench  Building in Space Kit  Lego Bricks Shuttle Activity Kit  Lego Bricks ISS Kit 1  Lego Bricks ISS Kit 2  Satellites Kit  Space and Airport Kit  Simple Machines1 Kit  Simple Machines 2 Kit

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 11 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama LEGO BRICKS PROCEDURES  Lego Bricks building guides will be in a soft book and will go up on ULF-6 in the SODF CTB. It will then be transferred to the Lego Bricks CTB.  Lego Bricks procedures will reside in IPV and will link to the building guides, hardware list, and talking points.
