Background Born in 1930 raised in the mountain villages of southern France. By the 1940’s Bourdieu grew dissatisfied with “philosophy of the subject” and attracted towards the “philosophy of the concept” As a son and a grandson of sharecroppers; he rose to the ranks of becoming one of the world’s most cited social scientists.

Background Attended an elite school in Paris which brought together the country’s best students in an atmosphere of intense competition and devotion to learning. Started out as a philosophy teacher at a French high school. In his short stint as a teacher, Bourdieu ended up reluctantly serving his country in Algeria, which ended up channeling is intellectual focus on human behavior.

Bourdieu’s Writings First book, The Sociology of Algeria, published in 1957, and making it to the United States in The Sociology of Algeria, warned about the contradicting situations many uprising colonies would face in the eyes of independence. After training himself in Anthropology, sociology, and statistics, in 1972he wrote the book Theory of Practice.
