COKE VS. DIET COKE TIME FOR A DEMO!

DEMO Diet Coke vs. Regular Coke Will it sink or will it float? Will it sink or will it float FIRST: Create a hypothesis about what will happen when coke and diet coke are dropped into a beaker of water.  Put this at the top of your blank notes sheet

WHICH BLOCK HAS A GREATER DENSITY?

Let’s try an example Sally has a brand new golden dollar coin and wants to know if the material it is made of is more or less dense than water. The mass of the coin is 5g and the volume is 1ml. Will her coin sink or float?

#2 (HELP ME OUT!) Rayquan buys a new phone case for his iPhone. The phone case company advertised that the phone case will float in water in case it falls into a lake, pond, or toilet. Before Rayquan trusts the phone company, he wants to do an experiment to see if they are right. The phone case with the phone inside has a mass of 500g. If the volume of the phone case is 755ml, will the phone case float or sink if dropped in water? Explain.

#3 – do it on your own! Ralph has a new pair of sunglasses that he is taking on a boating trip. He wants to know if the sunglasses will float in case they fall into the lake. The sunglasses have a mass of 5g. When he places them in a beaker filled with 200ml of water, the water level rises to 210ml. Will his sunglasses sink or float in the fresh water lake? Explain.

SOLVE THIS! Paul wants to build a floating dock so he can walk out onto the water to watch the sun set. He knows the dock will need to be supported by buoys. One sample of the buoy material has a mass of 35g and a volume of 105ml. Will the material float in fresh water?

SOLVE THIS! Jackie is making a gift for her dad. She wants to give him a model fish tank with a model fish inside it. She wants to make sure the fish floats in a gel-like substance she is using as water in her model. The density of the gel is 1.2 g/ml. When Jackie drops the model fish into a graduated cylinder, the water level rises 8 ml. The mass of the model fish is 32g. Explain how Jackie should test whether or not the fish will float in the gel. Be descriptive and thorough in your response.
