The British Regime II:
Population-1763 1. The general composition of the population: A) inhabitants. B) Mainly Canadien C) Some Amerindians and a small black population (some were slaves)
Economy: Fur Trade: The economy is still based on furs. Still the main source for immigration. 1. Changes after the Conquest: A) French fur trade merchants are replaced by British ones B( Territory expands Northwest and now includes areas around the Hudson’s Bay and the Great Lakes. C) New fur trade companies: Hudson’s Bay Company, Northwest Company D) More trading posts develop. E) Resource (animals) is eventually EXHAUSTED (not enough).
Causes of the Quebec Act
1. James Murray (British) A) 1760: Military governor of Quebec 1763: Governor of Quebec B) He is VERY unique because he did not like Royal Proclamation, even though he was British. C) He supported the habitants farmers.
1. James Murray D) He encouraged French Canadian traditions, legal rights and customs. E) He was essentially kicked out of Quebec for trying to promote his ideas. F) His ideas were eventually addressed in the Quebec Act in 1774, even though he died in 1766.
2. The American Revolution ( ) A) The Thirteen (American) colonies wanted independence from Britain. B) Influenced by the NEW idea of LIBERALISM, a war (revolution) began, and the American’s won!
3. The Loyalists A) Just like with anything, not everyone was in favor with the revolution. B) The American Revolution caused a new group of immigrants to settle in Upper Canada and New Brunswick. C) The Loyalists were: The American people that were still loyal to the British. D) British North America was the most logical place for them to settle since they were still a British colony, and it was much closer than going all the way back to Britain.
4. Impact of the American Revolution a) The British REALLY did not want another revolution in one of their colonies. b) They were afraid that the people in the Province of Quebec would rebel.

Quebec Act: 1774 1. Goal: Accommodate or Appease (be nice) the French Canadians Question: What would make the British want to ACCOMMODATE or APPEASE the French Canadians?
