Human Activities and Climate Change 7.6 p

OZONE A molecule that can absorb some of the harmful radiation from the sun What element in periodic table is in Ozone? Oxygen How Many atoms of Oxygen are in Ozone? 3 The Ozone layer, a layer in the upper atmosphere, actually contains very little ozone.

Source of Ozone

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) A chemical used in air conditioners and spray cans that can cause an ozone hole CFCs are human-made products that contain chlorine and Fluorine. CFCS block the cycle in which Ozone molecules absorb harmful UV rays. Most CFC’s were banned in the year 2000.

greenhouse gases Gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, or methane that absorbs and traps the heat leaving earth’s surface Many human activities are increasing the level of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere producing changes in the climate worldwide. Most of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was released by human beings burning fossil fuels.

global warming A gradual increase in the temperature of Earth’s atmosphere is called could result in melting glaciers, drought, or desertification Another effect of global warming is changes to living organisms in the biosphere. (As climates warm, organisms are pushed to find new locations and adapt or become extinct).

fossil fuel An energy-rich substance formed from the remains of organisms is a(n) Examples of Fossil fuels: coal, natural gas, and gasoline Looking at chart: when did the biggest increases in CO₂ levels occur and why?
