Nutritional Analysis and Assessment Unit 5: Internet Health Sites

 How was everyone’s week?  Week 5 is here!

Prior to development of computers and diet software the manual nutritional analysis of diets was difficult and time consuming ! - Manually calculation of intakes * Energy* Iron * Protein* Vitamin C * Carbohydrate * Total Fat * Calcium

Factors to Consider Established needs for obtaining the software Choose a dietary analysis system that is suitable to needs and tasks 3 Characteristics used to compare Programs

 Develops and maintains a number of databases  USDA Nutrient Database for Standard- SR  Primary Data Set for USDA Nationwide Food Survey – PDS  SR and PDS serve as the core for commercial and foreign databases

 Challenges in formulating high quality database  How many foods and nutrients to include  Use of non-USDA sources to give information on certain brand name foods and to fill in the missing data

 Nutribase  Food Works  Food Processor  What can these programs do for you?

 Why would you need these in a:  Hospital?  Nursing Home?  Outpatient Clinic?

 General operating features of diet analysis systems are extremely important  Determine whether a software package is easy to use  Include: Search and entry of food items  Comparison of results with a variety of dietary standards

 Many websites provide nutrition-based information  Can range from excellent to poor  1990’s free dietary analysis  MyPyramid Tracker

 Assess Your Food Intake The online dietary assessment provides information on your diet quality, related nutrition messages, and links to nutrient information. After providing a day's worth of dietary information, you will receive an overall evaluation by comparing the amounts of food you ate to current nutritional guidance. To give you a better understanding of your diet over time, you can track what you eat up to a year. Assess Your Food Intake

Assess Your Physical Activity Assess Your Physical Activity The physical activity assessment evaluates your physical activity status and provides related energy expenditure information and educational messages. After providing a day's worth of physical activity information, you will receive an overall “score” for your physical activities that looks at the types and duration of each physical activity you did and then compares this score to the physical activity recommendation for health. A score over several days or up to a year gives a better picture of your physical activity lifestyle over time.

General Information Egg Allergies Fish and Seafood Allergies Milk Allergies and Lactose Intolerance Peanut and Tree Nut Allergies Soy Allergies Wheat and Gluten Allergies Associations and Organizations

Currently online dietary assessment programs fall far short of dietary programs by: Slower and more cumbersome to use Do not generally allow nutrient analysis from multiple days Have databases with fewer foods and nutrients Do not have as many special features Lack of help function

Midterm paper this week!
