Compounds What do we already know? BrainPOP Teaser BrainPOP Teaser 1)What is a mixture? a) A physical combination of two or more substances that do not form new substances. 2) Name some of the ways that mixtures are classified ? a) Heterogeneous or homogeneous, solution (which includes solvent and solute), Page 1

Compound : Vocabulary Part I 1)chemical change: it is a change in matter that results in a new substance that is different from the original substance 2)compound: is formed when two or more substances combine. 3)chemical formula: has symbols to show what elements have combined to form a particular compound. 4)subscripts: indicates the number of atoms that have combined. Compounds : Main Ideas 1) What is a compound? (pg. 391)  A compound is when two or more elements combine to form a new substance (carbon, sugar, salt, water). 2) How are compounds written? (pg ) You write its chemical formula using subscripts. Sugar = C 6 H 12 O 6 This tells you that there are 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms and 6 oxygen atoms. Page 6 Types of Matter: Lesson 2

3) How are compounds identified? (pg ) - They can be identified by their melting point, freezing point, boiling point and density. They can also be identified by their chemical properties, such as what color flame is produced when they are burned. Page 7 Compounds : Main Ideas Types of Matter: Lesson 2
