TREASURE PLANET.

Synopsis: ◦ The legendary "loot of a thousand worlds" inspires an intergalactic treasure hunt when 15-year- old Jim Hawkins stumbles upon a map to the greatest pirate trove in the universe in Walt Disney Pictures' thrilling animated space adventure, 'Treasure Planet'. Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' - this film follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon.

◦ 'Treasure Planet' had an estimated budget of $140,000,000 (approx. £94,856,128.10). ◦ Took 10 years to make. ◦ Was Disney's biggest financial loss- $79 million in total. ◦ The first ever feature film to simultaneously be released in both regular and IMAX theaters. ◦ The films backgrounds are partially based on 19th century oil paintings. They were difficult to scan, so had to be digitally created digitally. ◦ Disney's third adaptation of 'Treasure Island'. Facts:

Liked:What could be changed: The originality. An unusual adaptation set in an alternate universe. Dialogue. Yes, there was some good lines, especially the rapport build between Jim and John Silver. However the majority was weak, it simply stated what was in an unadventurous way. The ending. How it didn't play out how the audience imagined. The linear structure. Flashbacks would have spiced it up, but considering the target audience was children, it would have been a hindrance. Personification of character. Not one character is the same, they each have their quirks that allow us to relate. The lack of information about the protagonist. It would've been nice to learn about Jim's past, his likes and dislikes, and more about his mysterious father. Adjustments:

Why I think It Failed: ◦The directors (Ron Clements, John Musker) pitched 'Treasure Planet' 3 times to Disney. The only reason that it got made was because the directors struck a bargain with Disney- that they would direct 'Hercules' on the condition that they could immediately begin 'Treasure Planet's production when they finished. ◦Considering Disney's lack of enthusiasm towards the project was ultimately the reason for failure. They didn't put much thought or effort into advertising as they didn't believe in the project. This meant that the potential audience were not 'woo-ed' by its charm. Resulting in a huge loss of profit.
