The city of Rochester is proud of its connections with Charles Dickens, and the great novelist is honoured at a special Dickens Festival every year at the turn of May and June. Local people dress up in Victorian costumes, there are readings and plays and famous characters from Dickens` novels put in an appearance to encourage the celebrations.
A treasure-house of books and manuscripts. The Library`s major summer exhibition for 1994 is Pictures of the Mind: Robert Louis Stevenson 1850—1894, which celebrates the imaginative world of one of Scotland`s best loved writers through books, manuscripts, photographs and film (July — October)
