“Computers: friends or foes?” Researcher: Pokidysheva A.-10th grade Tutor: Kurnikova L.N.

The purpose of my work is to find out if a computer is a friend or a foe.

Tasks: to study different sources on this topic to show harm which computer causes a man to make some conclusions

A computer is like a drug. Hypothesis A computer is like a drug. It can be used as a ‘medicine’ and be useful. But a man can interact with a computer unwise, harming himself. It can lead to a few bad consequences.

Ways of research: studying different kinds of literature and the Internet sites making up the diagrams, showing the results of interviewing students in Lyceum illustrating the essay with diagrams, pictures and photos according to the plot

Resources: Groza O.L., Dvoreckaya O.B. and others “New Millenium English – 10” Internet sites: www.inspace-media.ru www.helium.com www.computer.howstuffworks.com www.wiki.answers.com

In our century of the mad progress of science, economics, medicine and many other spheres of human life we don’t imagine ourselves without a computer and computer technologies.

The positive effects of the computers. The most positive quality of a computer is that it helps us to exist in the huge world. There are many benefits provided by computers and the Internet.

Computer is used for: Work Education Entertainment

The negative effects of computers. But also a man should not lose his head because a computer has a negative side besides all advantages. It has harm as much as good.

In my work, I interviewed the students of our Lyceum In my work, I interviewed the students of our Lyceum. The purpose of my survey was to know about the interaction of children with computers nowadays.

5 pupils 112 pupils I asked some students to answer the question, “Do you have a computer at home?” The results of my interview are shown in the following diagram. This diagram shows how many students in our lyceum have computers and how many students do not have. One hundred and twelve students answer that they have computers and only five say they don’t.

In this survey, I asked “What do you usually do in front of the computer?” 31 pupils 45 pupils 16 pupils 20 pupils This diagram shows that children do not use computers for their mental development, and for fun, harming their own health.

70 pupils In this survey, I asked “Do you feel tired after working on the computer?” The majority of students answered they felt tired sometimes. Twenty seven students said they always felt tired. And fifteen students weren’t tired at all.

In this survey, I asked “How much time do you spend at the computer?” Answers this question say about the shocking fact. Children spend on the computer all of their free time. More recently, the children walked in the street, biking in the summer and building snow forts in the winter in free time. But progress does not stop. Children are moving from the street into a warm and cozy house, where a box awaits them, connected to the world.

4 pupils 108 pupils At the end of my survey I wanted to know the answer to the question “Do you think a computer is a friend or a foe for you?” As we see the majority of the children (108 pupils) think that a computer is a friend. Four students answered a computer is a foe for them.

Results of research After all my interviews I realized that my hypothesis – a computer is like a drug – was true. In conclusion, I can say a computer is a friend, but people should interact with it only if they really need one. Otherwise this friend can become the enemy.
