Case Study: The Earth Solutions to Environmental Problems

What we can do for the Earth Recycle Reduce Reuse

What can we recycle? Bottle glass, newspapers and inserts, metal cans, plastic stamped #1 or 2, plastic bags marked #2 or 4. Mixed paper including junk mail, magazines, photocopies, boxes and phone books. Aluminum, motor oil, batteries, print cartridges and toxic materials.

Recycling reduces the need to cut down forests. drill for oil. dig for minerals. Why Recycle? Recycling saves energy. reduces the amount of material that must go to the landfill.

Help Us! Buy Recycled Only if you buy recycled products will we get recycled.

Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees which can absorb 250 pounds of carbon dioxide a year which reduces the greenhouse effect. prevents 1500 pounds carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere caused by burning a ton of paper.

Start by sending a postcard or letter to DMA Mail Preference Service, PO Box 9008, Farmingdale NY Include your complete name, address, zip code and a request to "activate the preference service". For up to five years, this will stop mail from all member organizations that you have not specifically ordered products from. This option may stop catalogs and promotions you would have liked to receive. Reduce: Stop junk mail and save trees.

Reduce your use. Buy products that are refills for the original container. Shorten your shower and do not leave the water running when it isn’t necessary. Plant drought resistant grass. Carpool, take your bike or walk to where you are going.

Ways we can reuse materials: Use canvas bags at the grocery store instead of plastic bags. Take old glasses to a nearby pharmacy. Erase mistakes instead of using a new sheet of paper. Give outgrown clothing to a “care and share” facility.

Remember When we think we are throwing something away we are really just putting it somewhere else. Help me, help yourself, help the earth. Put everything in its proper place--a place where it can be recycled, reduced or safely stored.
