1 ST FIVE PRESIDENTS

GEORGE WASHINGTON  Federal court system was established  The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution of the United States.  Plans were initiated for development of the national capital in Washington D.C., and Benjamin Banneker, an African American astronomer and surveyor, helped complete the design for the city.

JOHN ADAMS  President from Massachusetts  A Two -party system emerged (came about) during his administration (Federalists and Democratic-Republicans)  He had a cautious but forceful foreign policy (he kept us from going to war with France, but still built up our navy and army)

THOMAS JEFFERSON  He bought the Louisiana territory from France  This was known as the Louisiana Purchase  Lewis and Clark explored this new land west of the Mississippi river.

JAMES MADISON  The War of 1812 caused European nations to gain RESPECT for the United States  Hint: “MAD” about the war = Madison

JAMES MONROE  He wrote the Monroe Doctrine warning European nations NOT to interfere in the Western Hemisphere.  While he was president, the United States acquired Florida through a treaty with Spain
