Sustainable agriculture is critical in the global effort to eradicate hunger and poverty. There are an estimated 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty and nearly 900 million people that are hungry, malnourished and food insecure (who have difficulty acquiring food). Over 25% of our current food supply is wasted. – Developed countries food is thrown out and over consumed – Developing countries food is lost to unreliable storage and transportation. Hunger is often caused by food waste and inequality of distribution, not scarcity. DID YOU KNOW?

LAND USE LESSON SAMPLE SLIDES
Mountains, Arctic, Antarctic, Desert Cities & Land too Wet, Dry, Rocky 10% Less than 10% of the earth’s land (or 3% of the earth) has ideal conditions for growing crops Oceans, Ice, Lakes, Rivers
COMPARE HUMAN SETTLEMENT TO THE BEST SOILS Agricultural Land World Population Density 10% of the Earth’s land has ideal crop growing conditions. With best management practices, innovation and technology we can use nearly 40% of the total land to grow food or provide grazing for livestock. It is estimated that a hectare of productive land (roughly the size of two football fields) is lost every 8 seconds India China
As the world population grows, we must balance the land-use needs of Nature Agriculture Urban & Businesses Best Management Practices are key to our future BALANCE

SUMMARY LESSON SAMPLE SLIDES
RECORD YOUR IDEAS AS A GROUP “How will we sustainably feed 9 billion people in the year 2050?”
SHARE YOUR IDEAS
Best Management Practices are very important (such as 4R Nutrient Stewardship) Soil health plays a huge role in crop yields Water must be conserved and protected The Ripple Effect starts on the farm and spreads to communities, countries and the world Agriculture careers are everywhere! There are a lot of people helping us feed the world. RECAP OF KEY LEARNINGS
Over 1 billion people (1 in 3 of eligible workers) work in agriculture/agribusiness Educating and empowering smallholder farmers, many of whom are women in underdeveloped countries, has a powerful ripple effect. Investment drives efficiencies, growth and development. It creates employment opportunities, infrastructure, political stability, and improved quality of life. To feed 9 billion people we need to reduce food waste and help our current agriculture land reach it’s full potential with technology and best management practices. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
