The Scottish first came to NZ During the mid and late 1800s a large number of Scottish migrants settled in New Zealand, especially in the South Island provinces of Otago and Southland. Dunedin (from Dunedin, the old Celtic name for Edinburgh) is the capital of Otago. It was designed as a city for members of the Free Church of Scotland, which broke away from the Church of Scotland in The Scottish architecture can be seen through out NZ.

The Scottish came to NZ because, they were seeking opportunities of various forms of economic opportunities. They also wanted to get away from the country because of violence and because of how New Zealand has a good education system and a desired lifestyle. Also, because they wanted to bring some of the Scottish traditions and foods over; such as whisky, rugby, porridge, bagpipe bands and of course kilts.
