Olympic Games Olympic games were held to honor the god Zeus. In ancient Greece, at the beginning of the Olympic games, they would light the altar of Zeus. At the beginning of the modern Olympic games, they light the Olympic flame Many countries had sport competitions But, the Greek Olympics are one of the few that still happen today.

Continue…. Olympics The Olympic games feature 2,600 athletes but only a few hundreds play. Only men can compete in the Olympics. In the long jump you have to carry weights If you start the event before the trumpet was played you will be disqualified. There were no events In winter because it was too cold to compete.

Continue…..Olympics The modern Olympics have winter competitions. The Olympic games in Greece were held every four years. The modern Olympics also happen every 4 years. The Olympic games were always held in Olympia. Some of the events were: Boxing Chariot racing Riding Discus Javelin Jump Wrestling

Young People Olympics Only men were allowed to enter the Olympics. However, boys played some games like field hockey. (picture below) Boys usually played naked so girls couldn’t watch Girls played some activities like juggling Spartan girls exercised with no clothes, while Athenian girls exercised with clothes like this one

Sports without Greek contribution Many sports’ roots came from the Greeks Without their contributions, our sports would be undeveloped. Hockey, wrestling, foot racing, Boxing, Chariot racing, Riding, Discus, Javelin, Jumping, and Wrestling wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the Greeks. We would have under developed sports and no world competitions like the Olympic games

Panathenaic Games Panathenaic games are only for Athens. It is held to honor the goddess Athena. The best part of the festival is the parade. Some of the events are horse and chariot races. Men run in heavy armor was funny to watch because they get tired fast.

Continue….. Boxing and wrestling were very dangerous because in the boxing event you can only win by killing the other person There was an event called the pancratium where men were allowed to punch, kick, and even choke each other. In order to win in the pancratium, you must make the other fighter surrender, lose consciousness, or die.

Conclusion As you can see, Greeks played a major role in developing sports The modern sports-including Olympics-wouldn’t be like it is today if it wasn’t for the contribution of the Greeks. In our daily lives, almost everything has a trace of Greek Contributions: medicine, art, sports, theatre, and many more….
