Gene control Know what genes are. (F) Know what genes are made of. (F) Describe how genes work. (H) Starter: Write a full set of instructions for sending a text on your phone.

A recipe for life In front of you there is a piece of chocolate swiss roll. It is your job to find out how to make that swiss roll using the recipe books provided. How many recipes do you need?

The “human cake” Do we have a recipe inside us to decide how we look?

DNA DNA is our body’s recipe. It determines how you look on the inside and outside.

It’s in the genes If DNA is like a recipe, then genes are the ingredients. Swiss roll is made of sponge and of buttercream. Two recipes go into making one cake. Some characteristics need the input of more than one gene.

Back to base-ics DNA is made up of smaller chemicals called bases. There are 4 bases: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine and Guanine. These are shortened to A, T, C and G. A always pairs with T. C always pairs with G.

Work to do Answer questions 2, 3 and 6 from pages 40/41.
