What makes something ?

Order your shapes from smallest to biggest.

When we find out how much space a flat shape covers or “takes up” we are finding the AREA of the shape.

So which shape has the biggest AREA ? A B C D E

To find AREA you count the UNIT SQUARES inside a shape

So which shape has the biggest AREA ? A B C D E 24 square units 20 square units 24 square units 20 square units 11 square units

So which shape has the biggest AREA ? A C 24 square units 24 square units

Can you find the area of your classroom?

The area of our classroom is ________ square units.

When would you need to find area? Painting a wall This is AREA.

When would you need to find area? Tiling a room

When would you need to find area? Laying sod (grass) down

Your Turn For #1-5, determine the AREA of each figure. For #6-9, draw a figure with an AREA of the amount shown.

Closing How can you find the area of a figure? Do all 2-D (flat) figures have area? Name two situations in which you would need to find the area of something.

Exit Ticket 1.What is the area of the figure below? 2.Draw a figure with 6 square units.
