Patrick Henry Speech in the Virginia Convention

Patrick Henry ( ) Remembered most for his fiery battle cry “Give me liberty or give me death!” Considered most powerful orator of the American Revolution. Helped inspire colonists to seek independence from Britain.

Early Life… Born in Hanover County, Virginia. Home-schooled. Married at 18. Fire destroyed farm. Began studying law, and received degree in 1760.

Stamp Act Elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. Declared opposition to the Stamp Act in powerful speech. In speech, accused King George III of treason… Virginia became first colony to protest the Stamp Act.

First Continental Congress Became leader of opposition to British policy. King dissolved Virginia legislature. Later organized a small group of legislators who met in a tavern in Williamsburg. Attendees became members of the first Continental Congress.
