Parenting

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.“ - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Parenting Parenting Verses Old Testament Parenting Verses New Testament

Parenting Today’s Themes: (1) According to the Bible, what is the central question we should be asking about parenting? (2) According to the Bible, what is the greatest danger in parenting?

Parenting

3 Questions Parents Take to Bible: 1) How do I get my kid saved? 2) How do I control my kid's behavior? 3) How do I give my kid a happy life?

Parenting 1) "How do I get my kid saved?" Answer: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” (John 6:44) Implication: You can't get your kid saved.

Parenting 2) "How do I control my kid's behavior?" Answer: If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid. (Deut. 21:18-21) Implication: You can do everything right and still not control your kid's behavior.

Parenting 3) "How do I give my kid a happy life?” Answer: Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. (Hebrews 12:7-11) Implication: Happiness isn't the primary goal of childhood.

Parenting My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. - Proverbs 2:1-5 Parental Discipline Child’s Actions Godly Life + =

Parenting “Fear of the LORD”: - True piety - God-oriented life - Doing what God asks - Religious devotion - A life of trust in God - Reverence for God - Obedience to God - A controlling motive for life - A wholesome dread for displeasing God

Parenting “The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.” - Proverbs 14:27

Parenting "Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death" - Proverbs 19:18

Parenting DAVID: Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. (His father [David] had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?") - 1 Kings 1:5-6

Parenting MANOAH: "Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. When he returned, he said to his father and mother, "I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife." His father and mother replied, "Isn't there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?" But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me. She's the right one for me.".... Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. - Judges 14:2-3, 5

Parenting HOW TO RAISE A DELINQUENT 1)Begin from infancy to give the child everything they want. In this way they will grow up to believe that the world owes them a living. 2) When they pick up bad words, laugh at them. It will encourage them to pick up "gutter phrases" that will blow the top of your head off later. 3) Never give them any spiritual training. Wait until they are 21 and then let them decide for themselves.

Parenting HOW TO RAISE A DELINQUENT 4) Avoid the use of the word "wrong". It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition them to believe later when they are arrested for stealing a car that society is against them and they are being persecuted. 5) Pick up everything they leave lying around - books, shoes and clothes. Do everything for them so they will be experienced in throwing the responsibility on to others. 6) Let them read any printed matter they can get their hands on. Be careful the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilized but let their mind feed on garbage.

Parenting HOW TO RAISE A DELINQUENT 7) Quarrel frequently in the presence of children. Then they won't be too shocked when the home is broken up. 8) Give the child all the spending money they want. Never let them earn their own. Why should they have things as tough as you had them? 9) Satisfy their every craving for food, drink and comfort. See that every desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harmful frustration.

Parenting HOW TO RAISE A DELINQUENT 10) Take their part against the neighbors, teachers and policemen. They are all prejudiced against your child. 11) When they get into real trouble, apologize for yourself by saying, "I never could do anything with them". 12) Prepare for a life of grief - "You will have it."
