Eph. 2:1-3

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) I. ONE WHO IS DEAD SPIRITUALLY A. Dead through trespasses & sins (2:1). B. Walked after the course of the world (2:2). C. Walked after Satan (2:2). D. Lived in lusts of the flesh, doing the desires of the flesh & mind (2:3). E. By nature children of wrath (2:3). (Long Use, Habit, “Native Tongue”)

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) II. WAYS OF DISOBEDIENCE A. Rebellion – Refusal to obey. Israel refused to enter Canaan: (Num. 13: :12, 20-30) 1. Blamed Moses & Aaron (14:2). 2. Blamed God (14:3). 3. Feared people of the Land (14:9). 4. Believed not God (14:11; Dt. 1:26-33). 5. Refusal in spite of evidence.

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) II. WAYS OF DISOBEDIENCE B. Doing What God Prohibits. Israel presumed to enter Canaan: (Num. 14:36-45) 1. Changed their minds… too late (14:39-42). 2. Were “forward” (Dt. 1:41-43). 3. This is “self-will” (2 Pet. 2:9-10). 4. Fornication, Adultery, Homosexuality, etc.

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) II. WAYS OF DISOBEDIENCE C. Adding To God’s Requirements Warning (Deut. 4:1-8; Rev. 22:18-19)! 1. If man adds laws, who is glorified? 2. Going beyond revealed Truth = leaving God behind (2 John 9). 3. Yet many have no fear in adding instrumental music, denominational names, etc.

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) II. WAYS OF DISOBEDIENCE D. Leaving Off Some Commands Warned against diminishing (Deut. 4:1-8; Rev. 22:18-19) 1. Saul & Amalekites (1 Sam. 15:1-24). 3. Partial obedience is still rebellion (15:23). 2. Moral cowardice lost Saul the kingdom (15:15, 21, 30). 4. Change deeds, not repent (Acts 8:22) ?

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) II. WAYS OF DISOBEDIENCE E. Substitution Is any change in the pattern acceptable (2 Tim. 1:13)? 1. “It will do just as well”? 2. Pattern for fellowship (Rom. 14)? 3. Pattern for Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11)? 4. Pattern for righteousness (1 Jn 3:7)? 5. If can change one, why not all?

SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE (Eph. 2:1-3) CONCLUSION: Whatever we do that is beyond, short of, or instead of God’s revealed will; is disobedience (Col. 3:17). Are we doing the works God has prepared? (Ephesians 2:1-10)
