The implications of Institutionnal Design for Macroeconomics performance: Reassessing the claims of consensus democracy By Liam Anderson

Liam Anderson Arend Lijphart Anderson criticized the conclusions of Lijphart witch defend the idea that consensus democracy benefits on economics performance

Consensus Democracy (proportionnal representation) core elements: - Proportionality - Effective number of parties - Cabinet durability - Coalition size

Weaknesses of the paper: - Low numbers of observations on a short period of time - Descriptive argumentation and no explanatory argumentation

- Corporatism has a stong negative relationship with unemployment and inflaion rates -Strong negative relationship between Independance of the central bank and inflation rates

No explication of why the four core elements of consensus democracy lead to inferior economic performance Explication of why The independence of central bank and corporatism lead to macroeconomic performance BUT No explication of why the central bank is independent and why there is more corporatism in a consensus democracy

The Ideal model of Liam Anderson is: - Majoritarian political system - Corporatist system of interest inter mediate - ICB Problem: there is not a single country witch demonstrate this theory Why? Because we are missing « something more »

CONCLUSION According to the definition of Tagapera this model is: Descriptive and not Explanatory
