Common Characteristics Less than 25 years old Father not in home Domineering mother Academically challenged Emotionally and/or psychologically disabled Unmarried, maybe living at home w/ parents Feelings of inadequacy and insecurity Fascination with fire Alcoholism Parental neglect or abuse
Usually exhibit several, but not all characteristics Sometimes exhibit none Not all with these characteristics are arsonists
Early warning signs Aggression Cruelty to humans & animals Destruction of property Deceit Theft = indicate a conduct disorder If starts a fire, aimed to harm - usually male and very impulsive
Motives Financial gain - insurance fraud - burn down competition Revenge (spite) - for a cause, jealousy, or prejudice Excitement - no specific targets; just for fun
Vanity - to be the hero To conceal a crime - destroy evidence Vandalism - usually under age 18 (related to revenge & excitement)
