SUPPORT AND MOVEMENT

Human body has a total of 206 bones There are a total of 22 bones in the skull alone In the ear, there are three bones which are the smallest in the body. About 2cm long Common names of bones are different than the medical names

Bones Made of cells Reproduce grow

Most bones are made of 6 tissues Cartilage--- tough flexible tissue Cushions where bones come together Ex. Ears and the tip of your nose

Outer membrane Contains nerves, blood vessels, supply bone with blood This is the area that gets bruised

Solid bone Compact hard part of bone Found along the edges Stores calcium

Spongy bone Contains empty spaces Found towards the ends Gives bone strength Stores calcium but is lightweight

Marrow--- produces blood cells, and platelets Ligaments--- tough fiber that hold one bone to another, found at bone joints

A joint is a place where bones come together 3 types Hinge- moves only back and forth Knee, elbow, jaw

Ball and socket- twists, turns/circle –Shoulder –Fixed joints—does not move (skull) –Gliding joint---wrist

Role of Muscles

A muscle is a body tissue that can change shape, size to cause movement Located in the heart, stomach, intestines, legs, arms
