World of work

Objectives By the end of these activities, students will be able to: Identify different kinds of work Understand that work is not always paid Recognise that people have different reasons for working

1. Clothes for work Why do you wear a uniform for school? What types of work can you think of where people wear a uniform? Why do people wear uniform or particular clothes for work? Does it affect how they work?

2. What is work? Discuss in pairs – What is the definition of “work”? Read the case studies and decide if each person is working: – Jonnie Peacock – Ed Sheeran – Sarah Williams – Paul Atkinson – Shani Yates What is the most important aspect of their work?

3. Why do people work? Work in small groups and write down the reasons why people work? Share your reasons with the class Now use the worksheet to rank the order of importance

4. Reflection - The World of Work What is the point of a uniform? What happens on non uniform days? Does not wearing a uniform make a difference to the way people work? Do people dress in a particular way to go to work. Why? Is work still work if you don’t get paid for it? What would happen if nobody worked?
