Single Subject Research Designs Can be used with 1 or a few students Are experimental designs Intended to show cause-effect

Single Subject Research Designs  A/B Design  A=Baseline  B & all subsequent letters=Intervention(s)  Basic teaching design  Does not show cause effect  A/B/A/B reversal or withdrawal design does show cause-effect  Some interventions cannot be withdrawn, hence the use of withdrawal terminology

Single Subject Research Designs  Multiple baseline designs involve 2 or more participants  Does not require a reversal or withdrawal  Relies on staggered implementation of intervention to demonstrate cause-effect  Participants’ behavior should change only when the intervention is introduced

Single Subject Research Designs  Alternating treatments design uses only 1 participant as a rule  Does not require a reversal/withdrawal  Seeks to discover which is the more effective intervention among 2 or more possibilities  Dependent on the participant understanding which intervention is in effect

Single Subject Research Designs  Useful in classrooms for action research projects  Focuses on improving the lives of participants  Can involve some qualitative data collection as well
