Conservation of Energy

Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed…only changed from one form to another.

ENERGY BEFORE = ENERGY AFTER Energy can be changed from one form to another, but it does not disappear.

Energy Conversion When one type of energy is changed or transformed into another type of energy

1) Food has POTENTIAL CHEMICAL energy. 2) When you eat it, the bonds in the atoms are broken and the energy is released to your cells. 3)Your body CHANGES the chemical energy to KINETIC MECHANICAL ENERGY when you run, jump, write, walk. 4) Finally, your body creates THERMAL (HEAT) ENERGY you can feel because the molecules inside you are moving! For example…

Th ink about the energy conversions taking place with a flashlight. Batteries Light & Heat Wires CHEMICAL ENERGY ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY ELECTRICAL ENERGY

ELECTRIC PENCIL SHARPENER WIRES GEARS & BLADES electrical energy mechanical energy

HEATING PAD WIRES HEAT electrical energythermal energy

PLANT PHOTOSYNTHESIS SUN electromagnetic energy chemical energy Plant changes sunlight and water into sugar (food) for plant!

Energy Conversion ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________ ______________

Can you think of More? Create a graphic organizer to illustrate energy conversions. draw a picture to represent four different energy conversion you may encounter in everyday life. Be sure to explain what type of energy it starts with and what type of energy it ends with. Examples Battery Lighting a Match Steam Engine
