Camouflage and Beak Design October 20 & 21

Protective Coloration  Also known as camouflage, protective coloration helps an organism to hide in its environment.  This can assist not only the prey, but the predator.

Beak Design  Birds have all different sizes and shapes of beaks for different purposes.

Kestrel Have small, sharp beaks to allow them to tear flesh from their prey.

Hummingbird Have a long, thin beak to allow them to sip nectar from flowers.

Discussion Questions  Describe a beak that would be good for breaking open hard nuts.  Describe a beak that would be good for digging insects out of cracks in rocks.  How could we explain seeing both of these beaks in the same habitat?

Suggested Answers  Stronger beaks to crush them  Long beaks to reach the insects

Ticket Out  3-2-1!  3 Things you learned  2 Things you found interesting  1 Question you still have
