Elements of Fiction Objective: Identify and analyze different elements in fictional writing, characterization and point of view. Plot Theme Setting Characterization Narration

Plot Simply put, plot is what happens in the story. Some call it the storyline. Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution

Theme It’s the moral of the story. Themes do not provide any plot developments and apply to many types of stories in almost any genre. (i.e. If you set aside your differences and work together, anything is possible….”Remember the Titans”)

Suspense The uncertainty or anxiety that a reader feels about what will happen next in a story

Foreshadowing It is the use of clues or hints suggesting events that will occur later in the plot Obi Wan to Anakin “Why do I get the feeling you will be the death of me.”

Personification It is a figure of speech in which an object or animal is spoken of as if it had human qualities

Narration In your ISN title and highlight this section “Types of Narration” and copy the information from the following slides.

First Person Point of View: The narrator tells the story and is a character in the story. (Pronouns: I, me, us, we, our, etc.)

What is Third Person : The narrator is not a character in the story but can tell you the thoughts and actions of one key character at all times. (Pronouns: he, she, him, her, they, them, etc.)

Third Person Omniscient: The narrator is not a character in the story but can tell you the thoughts and actions of all characters at all times. (Pronouns: he, she, him, her, they, them, etc.)

Types of Characterization In your ISN title and highlight this section “Types of Characterization” and copy the information from the following slides.

What is the Protagonist The main character in a story is called the protagonist. She or he is always involved in the main conflict and its resolution. What is the Antagonist The person opposing the protagonist is called the antagonist (bad guy).

The protagonist is the “good guy”

The antagonist is the “bad guy” or force

Flat Characterization A character who has one side, representing one trait—often a stereotype. Flat characters help move the plot along more quickly because the audience immediately understands what the character is about. Example: Terminator movies

Round Characterization A character who is complex and has many sides or traits with unpredictable behavior and a fully developed personality. Example: Like The Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)

Static Characterization A character who does not change or develop beyond the way in which she or he is first presented. Example: Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird.

Dynamic Characterization A character who experiences an essential change in personality or attitude. Protagonists are almost always dynamic. Example: Gerry in Remember the Titans

Types of Conflict Label and highlight the next section Types of Conflict.

External Conflict There are three types of external conflict: character vs. character; character vs. society; and character vs. nature.

Character vs. Character The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with others, especially the antagonist.

Character vs. Society The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with society as a whole.

Character vs. Nature The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with the elements of nature.

Internal Conflict Character vs. self. The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with her or his conscience.

Character vs. Self The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with her or his conscience

Processing For every element we covered, give an example from a movie, book or play and explain WHY that element fits Use a picture to further demonstrate your the explanation

The following is an example of: Sam wished he could rid himself of the sick feeling in his gut that told him something terrible was going to happen, and happen soon. The following is an example of: Live life to the fullest because you never know what tomorrow may bring The following is an example of : "What are you doing?" Yossarian asked guardedly when he entered the tent, although he saw at once. "There's a leak here," Orr said. "I'm trying to fix it." "Please stop it," said Yossarian. "You're making me nervous." "When I was a kid," Orr replied, "I used to walk around all day with crab apples in my cheeks. One in each cheek." Yossarian put aside his bag from which he had begun removing his articles and braced himself suspiciously. A minute passed. "Why?" he found himself forced to ask finally. Orr tittered triumphantly. "Because they're better than horse chestnuts," he answered foreshadowing theme Third person (limited)

Identify the type of narration________________________________ Ray walked the mile from the hospital to Bob's Sunoco. He found Gary in the bay, changing the oil on a pale blue Cadillac. He kicked his brother's feet until Gary rolled from beneath the car. "We gotta talk." Gary wiped sweat from his eyes. It wasn't like Ray to interrupt him at work. "I get off at three." "Now." Gary stood and wiped his hands on an oily rag. "What's up?" "Let's walk." Ray feared his brain was going to explode. Too much was going on, too many things were changing. He'd read the front page of the newspaper over and over while waiting in the doctor's office. The Apollo 7 astronauts were heading home after eleven days in space. President Johnson was negotiating for the release of fourteen North Vietnamese POW's. And Jackie Kennedy, the dead President's wife, was marrying a Greek billionaire the very next day. He didn't even know if it was legal for the President's widow to marry a foreigner. Gary followed Ray outside and toward town. He didn't like it that Ray was so quiet. "What did the doctor say about Mom?" Ray hated to break the news. "He put her in the hospital." Identify the type of narration ____________________________________ I knew I shouldn't have let Grandma go down there.
