Is a representation of an artist drawn, painted, sculpted, or photographed by the artist.

It was not until the Early Renaissance in the mid 15 th century that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work.

In the earliest surviving examples of medieval and renaissance self-portraiture, historical or mythical scenes (from the Bible or classical literature) were depicted using a number of actual persons as models, often including the artist, giving the work a multiple function as portraiture, self-portraiture and history/myth painting.renaissanceBibleclassical literature

Ruben’s The Four Philosophers (1611–12) is a good example of an artist placing himself in a portrait, standing on the left.

In the 17th Century, Rembrandt painted a range of self-portraits. In The Prodigal Son in the Tavern (c1637), one of the earliest self-portraits with family, the painting probably includes Saskia, Rembrandt's wife, one of the earliest depictions of a family member by a famous artist.RembrandtThe Prodigal Son in the Tavern

Family and professional group paintings, including the artist's depiction, became increasingly common from the 17th century onwards.

Select a third of your four photos. You will create a self- portrait in the style of Van Gough or Freda Kahlo Once you complete this project, you may move on to the next. Select a fourth of your four photos. You will create a self- portrait in the style of Dali Once you complete this project, you may move on to the next. You will be working at your own pace until to complete the projects for this unit. MATERIALS: Any medium that you choose.

When you complete the projects, you will complete a test for this unit on Edmodo. You will move on to your next Art II Unit: Sculpture upon the completion of this unit.
