Living things are divided into two groups Autotrophs –Plants –Some bacteria –Can make own food –Eat that food –Photosynthesis Plants use the power of the sun to make their own food (carbohydrates) from simple things like carbon dioxide and water. Heterotrophs –Fungi –Some bacteria –Animals –Must eat food –Consumers –Omnivores –Herbivores –Carnivores –Decomposers –Scavengers

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis allows plants to harvest the sun’s energy and convert the energy into a useful product (forage) that plant-eating animals can use. That is why plants are called producers in the food chain. Animals are called consumers in the food chain because animals eat plants or other animals. Producers are low on the food chain. It takes many producers to provide enough food for one plant-eating animals such as a cow. A cow would be a consumer on the food chain.

Assignment Use inspiration program to build a food web or food chain that includes at least 10 organisms. We will discuss an example in class.

Plant Parts Plants have parts with different jobs. The main parts include roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Plant parts have different shapes, sizes, colors and textures. The specific combinations make each plant unique.

Roots What do roots do? –Anchor the plant –Provide the plant with water and nutrients from the soil –Name some plant roots that we eat….

Kinds of Roots There are two basic kinds of roots. Forbs and shrubs usually have tap roots. A carrot is an example of a tap root. Grasses and grass- likes have fibrous roots. Fibrous roots look like hair.

Stems What do stems do? –Anchor the plant –The veins in the stem transport water and nutrients through the plant –Name some stems we eat….

Leaves What do leaves do? –Leaves allow the plant to photosynthesize –Small holes (pores) in the leaves gather and release carbon dioxide, oxygen and water. –What are some leaves that we eat……

Flowers What are flowers for? –Flowers produce seeds for the plant –Flowers attract insects for pollination –Give an example of fruits that we eat….

Germination of a Monocot Monocotyledon Plants –Have one seed leaf –Have flower parts in groups of 3’s –Include grasses, grass-like and some forbs –Examples, corn, iris, lilies

Germination of a Dicot Dicotyledon Plants –Have two seed leaves –Have flower parts in 4’s or 5’s –Include most forbs and shrubs –Examples include, bean, peas
