 What is business?  Business activity involves a person or organisation providing a product or service to someone else. This process usually involves payment.

 Can be divided into the following: o Scale of operation o Ownership o Business sector

 Scale of operation: o Local o National o International o Global  Ownership: o Public o Private o Not-for- profit/voluntary

 Business sector: o Primary o Secondary o Tertiary

 Make a list of ten businesses you might visit this week. In each case, state whether: o You think the business operates only locally o You have seen the business in other locations in the UK o In your view the business may operate on an international basis o Discuss your list with the person sat next to you

 Not all businesses are set up to make a profit  For example Doctors without Borders, the international charity provides doctors and nurses across the globe to areas where there are wars, famines and other situations in which people are suffering  A voluntary organisation is also a not-for-profit organisation  It is set-up, organised, staffed and run by people who are working purely on a voluntary basis, usually for a good cause  E.g. Women Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)
