3 We have relied for years on partnerships with the global NRENs to interconnect our own sites, both for Teaching & Learning and Research. With the launch of new degree-granting campuses, research activity within NYU is increasingly global. Across our global campuses, the community indicated that it wished to collaborate with the other research universities in our regions; not just with NYU schools and sites. A global community of interest began to coalesce, with Universities and NRENs joining a dialogue about how to address similar goals. 7 In-Region Use Cases High-Performance Computing – NYU operates BuTinah, the largest HPC cluster in the UAE; researchers regularly access and transfer data to/from both BuTinah and our NYC cluster – all from across NYU’s global campuses, including Shanghai. (example: NYU Genomics) Inter-University Collaboration – Medicinal chemists at NYU Abu Dhabi and University of Georgia perform rigid and flexible docking experiments and do analysis and visualization of docking results Global Data Collection and Research Coordination – The Center for Global Sea-level Change (CSLC) at NYU Abu Dhabi conducts research that will develop the capability to project sea-level change for the next century and beyond; Faculty across campuses coordinate in the effort to educate students on the biology and data collection techniques associated with such research.

8 NYU-Specific Drivers and Outcomes Mission – Enable evolving Teaching & Learning models and expanding Research programs that span our own campuses and extend to other institutions; The exchanges provide us with expanded and improved connectivity to a greater number of global NRENs and, therefore, both NYU sites and partner institutions Economics – Network connectivity continues to stand out as one of the largest technology operating components for our global campuses; Through the Exchanges, Increases in both throughput supply (economy of scale) and choice enable us to stay engaged in the global connectivity marketplace, maintaining the connections that our community expects from us “Public” Cloud Services – Our community requires connections not only to the R&E Institutions, but also to commercial cloud services; like many large research institutions, we depend on both IaaS cloud services (such as Amazon and IBM) and SaaS cloud services (such as Google and Box) NYU Services - The exchanges enable us to improve the regional survivability of our services; for example, DMVPN hubs, Active Directory, DNS, and others; the presence of an exchange within a region from which our own key services emanate can improve the availability of University services for a given NYU location Diversity – In the case of Fujairah, the Exchange provides the added benefit of regional geographic diversity, creating an alternative path for the Global Network Architecture

11 Butinah, the largest high-performance computer in the UAE, supports computational research in astrophysics, climate modeling, and genomics through numerical modeling, simulation, and numerical analyses. Faculty in the areas of biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, and psychology use the supercomputer. The supercomputer is the fastest in the UAE, and was ranked in the June 2012 listing of the top 500, an industry ranking of the top 500 supercomputers around the world. The state-of-the-art resource was built by Hewlett-Packard, and is currently maintained at the Injazat headquarters in Abu Dhabi. BuTinah runs at approximately 70 teraflops (the general measure of computational power, which equates to one trillion floating point operations per second), and consists of 512 super-dense compute nodes, each of which has a memory capacity of at least 48 gigabytes. Additional memory nodes supply 192 gigabytes of RAM with an additional terabyte node dedicated for NYUAD’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology. Graphics processing units and visualization nodes included in the system are used for specialized functions, such as the translation of data into images. BuTinah will not only provide a vital resource for NYUAD research centers and faculty members, it will also enable greater research collaboration between NYUAD and other institutions across the UAE and the region. The machine is about 55% utilized by over 120 users. These include researchers in genomics, chemistry, global sea level rise, computational neuroscience, physics, prototype climate modeling, and social sciences. 14 The Center for Global Sea-level Change (CSLC) at NYU Abu Dhabi published a paper in Nature that found one of the most sensitive and critical areas of the Earth’s ice in West Antarctica is being affected by changes in the North and Tropical Atlantic, and has been warming for over 30 years. They are doing research that will develop the capability to project sea-level change for the next century and beyond. Significant sea-level change in the next century could have a huge impact on low-lying coastal areas. A study of the corals in the Arabian/Persian Gulf that survive extreme sea temperatures (summer mean: >34 C). It is unclear whether these corals have genetically adapted or physiologically acclimated to these conditions. The study will compare corals on reefs within the thermally- extreme Persian/Arabian Gulf with those in the neighboring Gulf of Oman.
