AfterSchool KidzScience

Lawrence Hall of Science Established in 1968 Renowned resource center for math and science education for children pre-school to high school A public science center with exciting hands-on experiences for learners of all ages At the University of California, Berkeley A national leader in the development of innovative materials and programs for students, teachers, families, and the public at large.

What is AfterSchool KidzScience? Grades 3–5 Inquiry-based science program Designed specifically for out-of-school settings Hands-on science activities Activities: Are engaging Are easy to lead Excite children about science Build science knowledge and inquiry abilities Help children learn important cooperation and team work skills

Goals for Children Children will: Do hands-on cooperative activities and learn how to investigate the way scientists do Leave each of the sessions thinking, “Science is cool and I can do it!”

What is Available? 4 Physical Science Kits Magnets Oobleck Bubbles Falling and Flying 4 Life Science Kits Exploring Habitats Predators and Prey Colors in Nature Beach Science 4 Green Science Kits (coming April 2011) Alternative Energy Fresh Water Waste Not Food From Plants (coming later)

What are the components? Currently 12 kits Each kit contains 4 sessions Each session is about 45 minutes

What’s included in a kit?

The Session Format Every session starts with a question of the day Engage Each session begins with a quick introduction and a question of the day designed to engage the children and get them thinking Explore During this part of the session, the children explore and experiment. Make Sense Each session ends with an opportunity for the children to reflect and make sense of what they’ve experienced and discovered.
