Presentation transcript:

Rafflesia Magnifica Critically endangered

 HABITAT o The rafflesia live mostly in the parts of subtrpical/tropical moist lowlands of South East Asia or in the Philippines  REPRODUCTION AND GESTATION o Flies will pollinate the flower the same way bees do and wild animals will disperse the seeds Rafflesia

 DIET o Water and Nutrients off it’s host plant  HOW DOES IT FIT IN THE FOOD CHAIN? o It feeds off of it’s host plant and small rodents will eat the plant’s seeds Rafflesia Magnifica 

o The Rafflesia is a first level consumer -it feeds off the nutrients of other plants o Animals eat it’s seeds Rafflesia

 BIOTIC FACTOR o It is a living part of its ecosystem Rafflesia Magnifica

 THREATS o The widespread habitat destruction within much of rain forested area of South East Asia o Slash and burn farming Rafflesia Magnifica

 LIMITING FACTORS o Diminishing habitats o The distance between a female and male flowers  NUMBERS AT PRESENT o Around 3000 Rafflesia

 ABILITY TO ADAPT o It produces a rotting meat smell to attract flies to help pollinate the flower Rafflesia Magnifica

 WHY IS IT A BUTTERFLY SPECIES? o The Rafflesia is a butterfly species because its life cycle is similar to the butterfly's ( starting from its cocoon) starts in a hard shell– then starts to bloom– then the petals get big and colorful like a butterfly’s Rafflesia  

 These flower buds have a high level of death and only 10% to 18%go on to bloom, but only lasting a few days  The flowers diameter can lead up to 3 feet long  The white pattern on the reddish pedals of the Rafflesia are not patterns but warts FUN FACTS

 These flowers are unisexual meaning that there can be a female and a male  This flower can take up to ten months to develop but only last 5-7 days FUN FACTS
