Chapter 4

Distress Vs. Arrest  Respiratory Distress is a condition in which breathing becomes difficult.  Respiratory Arrest is when breathing has stopped

Causes of Respiratory Distress  Choking  Illness  Chronic Conditions (Asthma)  Electrocution  Irregular Heartbeat  Heart Attack  Injury  Allergic reactions  Drug Overdose  Drowning

Signals of a Breathing Emergency  Trouble or no breathing  Slow or Rapid Breathing  Unusually Deep or Shallow Breathing  Gasping for Breath  Wheezing, Gurgling  Moist or cool skin  Flushed, Pale, Ashen or bluish skin  Dizziness  Pain in Chest, Tingling in hands, feet

Asthma  A condition that narrows the Air Passage.  30 million Americans affected.  Triggers such as cold air, allergens, exercise cause airway to swell and narrow.  Whistling and wheezing breathing sounds, coughing

Signals of an Asthma Attack  Wheezing  Trouble Breathing  Shortness of Breath  Sweating  Tightness in chest  Trouble talking without having to catch breath  Feelings of fear, confusion

Asthma Triggers  Dust  Smoke  Pollution  Perfume  Exercise  Animal Dander  Weather changes  Plants and molds

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)  4 th Ranking cause of death in the US  Smoking is the most common cause  Includes Chronic Bronchitis and emphysema  Airways become blocked  Air sacs in lungs can’t fill with air  No cure - gets worse over time

Emphysema  A Disease that involves damage to the lungs’ Air sacks.  Gets Worse over Time  No Cure  Common Signal is shortness of breath  Usually Caused by Smoking

Bronchitis  Bronchial Tubes become swollen and Irritated.  Caused by buildup of mucus that blocks air passage and exchange in lungs.  Caused by irritants and pollutants, usually caused by smoking.

Hyperventilation  Person breathes faster and more shallowly than normal.  This causes the body to not get enough oxygen.  Feel dizzy, confused, afraid, panic.  Caused by injury, illness or anxiety.

Allergic Reactions  Person’s face, neck and tongue may swell closing the airway.  Caused by allergens, insect stings, food and medications.  Severe form called Anaphylactic shock

Choking- Conscious  Back Blows  Abdominal Thrusts  Common causes> Food

Choking- Un conscious  Perform 30 chest compressions.  Check for object.  Give 2 Breaths

Rescue Breathing  Head Tilt / Chin Lift  Look, Listen, Feel for Breathing  Pinch Nose, Make a seal around their mouth.  Give 2 full breaths.  Check Pulse
