“They always had tea in the kitchen, much the nicest room in the house.” ― Flora Thompson

Kitchen is one of the most difficult areas of the home to design. Kitchen islands can be a beautiful addition to your kitchen and solidify its functionality. So, before installing a kitchen island its worth knowing the different types of kitchen islands out there and what purpose it’s designed for.

Basic Type This is situated centrally and can be accessed from all the four sides. Allows multiple people working together with ease and also becomes a social point where people tend to gather around. These types of kitchen islands are suitable for larges kitchen spaces.

Two-tier Island Two-tier Kitchen Island has two heights; the raised front hides the messy food preparation work from the people in adjacent space. The low and comfortable bar- height perch helps people to grab a quick bite without interfering with your food prep or cooking. These types of islands are suitable for quick, casual dining or adding visual interest.

Peninsula Counter Peninsula counter allows circulation on three sides and one side is connected to the rest of the kitchen counter. This forms and easy ‘L’ or ‘C’ shape and allows access from only one side but it positions everything within easy reach. This type is great for compact kitchen spaces.

Multi-purpose Kitchen Island These types of kitchen islands easily house the hob, sink and even a wine cooler. It enables the person who is cooking to turn toward the center of the room and allows him/her to keep an eye on kids or interact with guests. It also allows for easy portioning out and serving of food and drinks, too.
