You should come to this page: 1. Can you insert your screenshot of the 10-day forecast for Middlebury from this site and then resize it to fit here? First, copy and paste this link for Weather Underground into the address bar of your web browser t/middlebury?MR=1 Part I. Practice with Screenshots and Shortcut Keys

Part II. Using the ArcGIS Online World Topo Map Tool 4. Find your school and zoom in as close as you can. Then take a screenshot of your school and insert it here Hint: Which basemap will provide the best detail and the best “view” of your school? Notice that you can type in a location, like Middlebury, VT and the map will “find” and automatically resituate itself to Middlebury Find Middlebury, Vermont in the Search Field. Zoom in and out on a location that you know. Now let’s look at an interactive, browser-based GIS tool. Copy and paste this link into a browser window: tml?webmap=a72b0766aea04b48bf7a0e8c27cc c007 tml?webmap=a72b0766aea04b48bf7a0e8c27cc c007

Part II. Using the ArcGIS Online World Topographic Map Explore the Basemap options in the upper right corner of your browser window. 2. Which basemap(s) do you like best? Why? 3. What are some of the different uses for each type of basemap, and why do you think it’s important to have a variety of styles? Include a screenshot of your favorite basemap with your response

5a. Using the Measure tool, can you find the footprint (in square feet) of one story of Davis Family Library (Looks like a spaceship from the aerial view)? Include a screenshot of the polygon you drew. Did you notice the Measure tool in the top menu area of the window? Select the Measure tool. You can use this tool to trace features and draw lines, or to trace features’ outlines and calculate area. Notice how the tool automatically calculates distance of the lines (or area and perimeter of the shapes) that you draw. You can select the units in the palette 5b. If Davis Family Library has two and a half main floors, what’s the approximate square footage of the whole building? Show your calculation steps here. Part II. Using the ArcGIS Online World Topographic Map

Remember the pacing activity we did outside? We used our bodies to measure distance, and then calculated an estimate distance along the sidewalk that cuts across the lawn behind Battell Dormitory. Now let’s use the Draw Line tool to calculate the distance along the sidewalk using our second measuring tool, this digital GIS viewer. 6. Using the Draw Line tool, what is the length of the sidewalk we measured with our bodies (in feet)? Include a screenshot of the line you drew to calculate the answers Part II. Using the ArcGIS Online World Topographic Map We are here This is Battell Dorm

Part III. Record Keeping 7. Can you think of some reasons that errors occurred with pacing and the online GIS Viewer tool? Let’s back up your records from yesterday and compile them in a table

Part IV. Bonus! Can you find your home on the map? a. How far is your home from the school as the crow flies (in miles)? b. How far is your home from the school as you would drive on roads (in miles)? Include screenshots of the line(s) you drew to calculate the answers

Wrapping Up You did it! We hope this provided an introduction to some of the online GIS tools that are available in your area using locally- available data. Can you think of other applications for either of the tools that might affect the way you think about your day-to-day life? To Save your responses, go up to File/Save As… Include your name in the title of the presentation, and then select Format/PDF Follow up: What other questions could you ask using these online GIS tools? What was your favorite part of this activity? What was one thing you’d change about the activity? Thanks! We hope to see you again soon, and happy mapping!
